New Shared Care Coordination Section Now Open

(Posted 24th October 2005)
Our brand new Shared Care Coordination section is now open!

Making shared care schemes work involves strategic planning, clear local guidelines and good working relationships across a number of different agencies and professions. Without effective coordination a shared care scheme can struggle to develop, no matter how enthusiastic local practitioners are. The coordination of a shared care scheme is therefore essential and can be a very rewarding role, but it can also be isolated at times.

The aim of the section is to provide those involved in the coordination of shared care schemes with the opportunity to share practice and ideas. We hope to build up a library of resources on a number of different issues directly related to shared care coordination. We will also advertise any local and national events for shared care coordinators.

Introduction to PANN Now Available

(Posted 3rd August 2005)
The following document is now available to view online or download from the Other Resources section of the Library...

Background

The Pan London Primary Care Network for Substance Misuse (PANN) was launched in June 2001. It was formed as a forum to provide, for GPs and others working with drug users in primary care in London, training, support and policy updates and to provide on-going support to health professionals working within the London Shared Care Schemes.

2003 onwards

The meetings were expanded to recognise that PANN had developed into a Network to include people who had undertaken and wanted to take the RCGP Certificate in Drug Dependency and other senior practitioners working in the field of primary care drug treatment. The 3 afternoons a year can form part of practitioners continuing development plan.

It has become a recognised forum for debate and education about current practice and policy for specialist substance misuse practitioners. The meetings are in two parts. The first half is an open general meeting and has a primary topic. The second half the group divides into PCT/DAT or PCTs/DATs areas to look at how the topic under discussion is dealt with in these local areas. Mentors from the RCGP Certificate in Drug Dependency and volunteers from local areas run these smaller groups. These act as ongoing active learning sets for new and old certificate candidates and others from the area.

These groups also act as a forum to discuss local issues, learn together and develop primary care action plans for local areas. Anybody working in those areas can join these groups. Hopefully this has and will continue to lead to improved joint working in local areas, as well as London generally.

Meetings are 3 times per year, have a primary topic (which has been chosen at the preceding meeting) and other current issues are discussed.

NTA Client Satisfaction Survey Launched!

(Posted 1st August 2005)
The largest ever drug treatment service user satisfaction survey to be carried out in England

The final questionnaire is available now on the NTA web site.

A chance for service users to have their say and for treatment providers to help improve their service.

Service users in England have the chance to tell the NTA (National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse) how they really feel about the treatment they are receiving and the services they attend. The client satisfaction survey is an opportunity for users of drug treatment services to give the NTA their opinion of the treatment they are receiving and the services they are using.

This is the largest study of its kind ever conducted in England and forms part of the NTA's new treatment effectiveness agenda. A pilot study was carried out in two DATs with the assistance of two users' organisations earlier in the year and the full survey is being rolled out across more than nine hundred treatment service providers.

The aim of the study is to better understand the effectiveness of drug treatment and the best ways of retaining clients in treatment. The findings will help shape the development of drug treatment and delivery mechanisms over the next few years.

The questionnaire is completely confidential as it is filled in anonymously and provides a real chance for service users to have their say and affect the way services are delivered. We want as many people as possible to respond to the questionnaire.

We want to encourage as many service users as possible to take part in this survey and we are asking treatment services to make the questionnaire available to clients and, if necessary, help them to complete it.

See further details about the survey and how you can be involved (on the NTA web site)...

New SMMGP Web Site Launched!

(Posted 1st June 2005)
The brand new SMMGP web site is now up and running - we hope you like it!

The SMMGP web site first went Live on January 1st 2000 and has since undergone continual expansion. Its popularity has grown consistently and it currently achieves up to 800 visitors per week, as well as hosting a thriving online forum.

The look and feel of the SMMGP web site had not changed significantly since it first went Live over five years ago. Although it functioned perfectly well, a number of issues clearly required attention for the site to continue growing successfully and for it to attract new followers as well as satisfying its current visitors. A newly designed SMMGP web site was therefore produced.

The new design has been partly informed by the opinions of over 300 current SMMGP mailing list members who responded to a recent questionnaire (see "About the SMMGP Web Site" for more details), as well as by the visual style of the SMMGP's Network Newsletters, and advances in web technology.

Some of the key features of the new design are as follows:

One new feature you should definitely try is the Resource Library's Main Catalogue where you can access all the documents on the site by subject area, including every article from past SMMGP newsletters.

Some areas of the new site are still being redeveloped so please bear with us, and since the site is brand new there may well be the occasional error that need tidying up! If you spot any mistakes, or if something doesn't seen to be working properly please Contact Us and let us know so we can fix it.
